How do I check out a book?

If you've visited the library in its temporary location in Ackerman this year, you may be wondering where the books are and how you can check them out.

During renovation of Pierce Library, most of the collection is being stored in another building. When you make a request from the catalog, your book will be retrieved by Library staff. An email alert will be sent to you as soon as it is available for check-out at the Circulation desk. You can often pick the book up the same day you request it, or by the next day if you request late in the day.

Other pickup and delivery options for those living off campus and either inside or outside of Union County can by found in Library Tutorials (also available beneath Research Help on the Library home page).

Ars Poetica Reading

Your Library Password

Do you need to create a password to access your Library account, use the online databases, and make requests from the catalogs?

Click on My Account on the Library home page, and enter your EOU ID (9#). The first time you log in to My Account, use your last name (all lower case, no spaces or punctuation) as a default password. At the next screen, you will be asked to create a new password.

Passwords must be at least seven characters in length, and contain at least one letter (a-z/A-Z) and at least one number. (NOTE: Passwords are case sensitive). Additional password information can be found in the Library FAQ, available beneath Research Help on the Library home page.

BBC Shakespeare Plays in Streaming Video

If you're studying plays by Shakespeare this term, or enjoy watching them, a selection is now available in streaming video from the library list of databases.

Find the database list from the library home page - look for the Database tab in the search area to find books and articles - and click on LIST. Look for the link to Ambrose Digital Video (BBC Shakespeare Plays). If you are accessing the database from off campus, you will be asked to log in with your EOU ID (9#) and Library password.

Happy holidays, everyone! The library will be closed this weekend and from Monday, December 19 until Tuesday, December 27, in accordance with the EOU campus closure and the December 26 State holiday.

Library resources on the home page, including online databases, are available to EOU students, faculty, and staff during the closure. Access the databases using your EOU ID number and Pierce Library password. (If you need to obtain a password, information can be found in the library FAQ.)

Check out the ARTstor blog, with information and images from the collection in celebration of the holiday season. If you're new to using ARTstor, look for Help near the top (right side) of the screen after you access it from the alphabetical list of databases.

The ~15,000 year-old Airport Lane fossils were discovered by a bulldozer operator removing the top of a hill in a farmer's potato field in the southern Grande Ronde Valley in January 2010. After a year and a half cleaning the fossil fragments, gluing them back together, and making detailed measurements, we have been able to piece together a picture of what the southern Grande Ronde Valley was like at the peak of the last Ice Age.

Diatoms and sponge spicules in the silty fine sands at the site suggest deposition in shallow streams, floodplains, and ponds. Vegetation in the valley included grasses, juniper, and pondweed. Mountain hemlock grew on the hills surrounding the valley. Columbian mammoths, giant bison, and short-faced bear roamed the area and ground squirrels burrowed into the site. How the animals died remains a mystery.

Your EOU ID and Library password will enable you to access your Library account, make requests from the online catalogs, and access Pierce Library databases. Review Library tutorials to learn more about using these resources.

Where do I find the library materials that I need?

Now that the library is located in Ackerman, and much of the collection is in another location, you may be wondering how to find books or other materials that you need.

The easiest way to locate items is to use the Pierce Library online catalog, which is also available from the library home page in the area to find books and other materials.

If you would like to learn about information included in the catalog that will help you locate and request materials, try a search on the keywords "college student". When search results are found, note that location information is listed beneath the link to the item title. You will see that the College Student Journal, for example, is available in print and microfilm. The location information is followed by the instructions to Ask at Circ Desk (Library Use Only).

Scrolling through the list of results, you will see the most common location listed: Closed Stacks/Main Collection - By Request. This means that the item you need is shelved in the collection location, and will be retrieved for you upon request. As soon as it arrives at the Ackerman Library and is available for check-out, an email notification will be sent to your EOU email address; usually the same day or the next.

Additional information about requesting items from the catalog and delivery options for those living inside or outside of Union County can be found on the library tutorials page, which is also available beneath 'Help' on the library home page.

A New Year and a New Location

Hello and "welcome" to those who are new or returning! As you may know, Pierce Library is being renovated this year. You will find Library services and friendly staff located in the former Ackerman gym, which has been beautifully remodeled to serve as our temporary library!

Make online requests from the EOU catalog wherever you are, or go to the Ackerman Library to search for materials online and make a request for check-out during hours the library is open. Materials will be retrieved from the collection location and brought to Ackerman.

You will receive an email notification when items are ready for pickup at the Ackerman Library Circulation Desk. If you live outside of Union County, you can request that materials be delivered to your home, or to any other library near you that is listed as a pickup location. Learn more here.

The ERC (Electronic Research Center) is also located in Ackerman, with computers and staff available to help you with research. You will also find the Interlibrary Loan office there, and comfortable seating for studying or visiting with your friends. Study tables will soon be available on the balcony surrounding the main floor.

Other Library staff and offices are located on the third floor of Hunt Hall, including Answerland. If you have questions about Library services or need research assistance, please drop by the Ackerman Library, or email a question to Answerland.

Answerland Summer Service

The Fred Hill World War II Photograph Collection

The photo at left, "Fred Hill Family, Veterans", is from the Fred Hill collection; part of a special collection available from the library home page.

Lynn Hill - WWI - Ft. Lewis, Lloyd Hill - Korean era, Fred Hill - WWII - South Pacific, and Ed Hill - Vietnam era, were photographed as participants in a 1969 Veteran's Day parade in La Grande.

Most of the collection occurs between 1943 and 1945. Many of the images were taken by Fred Hill, and chronicle life and military life in the South Pacific.

Access the collection at http://pierce.eou.edu/home/collections. When you link to the World War II collection, look for the 'Help' button for search guidelines. Information about each photograph is included, and images can be printed.

Fred Hill Historical Collection

This wonderful photograph of the "Old O.W.R. & N. Depot, La Grande, Ore.", dated December 27, 1930, is part of another special collection that is available online from the Pierce Library home page.

Copies were made of historical images gathered by photographer Fred Hill, with subjects ranging from people and places to events. Most portray interests and history related to Oregon, but photos from other geographic areas are also included.

Our digital culture has ushered in a new level of disbelief in photojournalism and photography in general. Rather than debate the legitimacy of film photographs versus digital, Sell abandons reality in his fictional work and then presents his work as truthfully as possible.

His images are thoroughly documented, and his projects stretch from the gallery to the web. In case you're wondering what it really is, the photo at left (dated 1951) depicts a large boiler that sat outside the back of the newly built Walter M. Pierce Library.

This photo and thousands of others are available online from the library home page as part of our Special Collections.

EOU Historical Photos, where this behemoth can be found, highlight the history of Eastern Oregon University and include photographs of students, graduation ceremonies, the campus as it first appeared and grew, and much more! Collections are searchable and photographs can be printed.

Plug In to Your Library

Free open source software can help you find and manage resources from the library. LibX is a tool that provides many ways to search for books and articles at the library from wherever you are on the web. Go to the LibX home page to learn more about it, and click on LibX to install the Eastern Oregon University version.

Zotero is a citation manager that can help track and organize your sources and produce properly-formatted citations and bibliographies. Click on Zotero to download it and learn how to collect, organize, cite, and share your research sources.

November 11 Colloquium

Dani Weber, Ph.D., assistant professor of English and writing, will be the guest presenter for the next colloquium at EOU Thursday, Nov. 11.

Weber's presentation begins at 4 p.m. in Ackerman Hall, Room 210. Refreshments will be provided at 3:30.

Titled "The Gloves Are Coming Off, Gentlemen: Toward a Critical Discourse Analysis of the Bush Administration's Torture Memos," this dissertation research uses a mixed-methods approach to analyze what Weber considers a space of 'ground zero,' the so-called "Torture Memos." Using a cross-disciplinary method of rhetorical, linguistic and critical discourse analyses, Weber examines key documents and interrogates the language used to make torture not only legal, but also acceptable.

Citing Sources

I know, I know, citing sources is not a burning issue for some, but it is for those who are required to do so! (Knowing how will also make your professors very happy.)

Luckily, Pierce Library offers print and online resources that will help you get started. You will see a link to citing sources in the How do I... section of our home page, if you'd like to check out what's available online.

You will find an assortment of style guides, including Zotero, the "new kid on the block". It's a Firefox plugin that organizes research and automatically creates citations. (News came out in September that Zotero will soon provide support for Safari, Internet Explorer, and Chrome in addition to Firefox. Stay tuned.) Give it a try and let us know what you think!

Print resources can also be found in the library. Find call numbers by searching the catalog using the subject Authorship -- Style Manuals. The MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing 2008, for example, is located in the Reading Room (Call# REF PN147. G444 2008 - Library use only), on reserve at the Circulation Desk on the ground floor (Call# PN147. G444 2008 - Library use only), and in the main collection (Call# PN147. G444 2008 - may be checked out if it's on the shelf).

Other style manuals are also available in the library and on reserve. Try a subject search on Report Writing -- Handbooks, manuals, etc to find more results.

This past summer, Dr. Braker participated in a Fulbright sponsored visit to German universities in the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg to identify points of articulation between exchange programs on behalf of the student study abroad experience. Two other professors participated in a professional exchange between EOU and the Pedagogical University of Ludwigsburg, with an expectation that this faculty exchange is likely to flourish in the future.

Link to Article databases by title from the search area to find journal and newspaper articles on the Pierce Library home page.

Search an EBSCO database and look for an HTML link following the abstract for an article that's available full-text from the result list.

Link to the full text and look for Listen beneath the title to have content read aloud while highlighting follows along. Select text or start from the beginning. You may select a voice (American, British, or Australian accent) and reading speed (slow, medium, or fast).

Sometimes you may need to bring your children to campus. Use the study tables and computer available to you while you keep an eye on your children as they entertain themselves nearby. EBSCO Translates!

EBSCOhost makes it easy to find an article and translate it from one language to another. If you haven't already made that discovery, try this:

Go to the library home page and find the search area to locate journal and newspaper articles. Click on 'Article databases by title' and link to Academic Search Premier from the alphabetical list of databases. (If you are located off-campus, you will be asked for your last name and EOU student ID number or Library barcode to access the database.)

Enter a search term and check the box to limit results to full text (located on the same page beneath the search fields.)

Find an article that you would like to read in another language on the result list. If there is a link to HTML Full Text following the article abstract, link to it and look for the drop-down list to choose a language (Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Norwegian, Russian, and both Simplified and Traditional Chinese.) Click Translate to see the full text in the language you selected.

Click Return to return to English. Note: If you print, e-mail or save the full text, it will be delivered in the language of the database. However, you can print the translated text using your browser's Print function.

Spring Term Has Sprung

Spring is showing up on campus, along with returning students and some who are new. Those who work at Pierce Library are ready for another term of helping you find the information you need!

Many students have discovered that our study rooms on the second floor offer quiet places to study, while the Reading Room on the first floor is a good place to hang out and enjoy a hot cup of coffee or other beverages and snacks at Magna Cum Latte (8:00 am - 11:30 am M-F). Computers in the ERC on the first floor are available for doing research and searching the online catalogs.

Online students (and on-campus students who wish to email questions to us) know that Answerland is a quick and easy way to ask questions about Library services or request research help.

Distance students can expect to receive an email from the library during the first week of classes (sent to their EOU email address) with information about Library services, including setting up a Library PIN and using their EOU ID number (preferred) or Library barcode to access online databases and request materials from the catalogs.

Have a good term, and be sure to ask questions when you need to via Answerland or the Ask a Librarian page (beneath Help on the library home page.)

If you are accessing online databases from the Pierce Library home page, electronic resources (ex: E-books) from the Sage library catalogs (including EOU), or making material requests from the Summit catalog, you will be asked for:

Last name (lower case only)

EOU ID number or Library barcode

If you are accessing your Library account (for book renewals, etc.) from the Pierce Library home page (beneath My Account), or making material requests from the EOU or Sage catalogs, you will be asked for:

Library barcode or EOU student ID

Library PIN*

* Note: If you have lost track of your Library PIN, you can reset it from the link beneath My Account on the library home page. You can also email Answerland to have the PIN deleted from your record, or call the library at 541-962-3780. (Your PIN is encrypted, which means we cannot look it up for you. After it is deleted, you will be able to create a new one by following onscreen directions at any screen that asks you to enter a PIN.)

Google Books

Do you know that you can search Google Books from the Pierce Library home page? Look for it in the search area to find books and other materials. It's a good way to find a wide range of books relating to a topic, and a nifty feature allows for you to find it in a library. Try the following search:

Go to Google Books and enter academic achievement in the search box. Building Background Knowledge for Academic Achievement will appear in the result list.

Link to the book and look for Find in a library on the left side of the page. Click on it and scroll down to find Eastern Oregon University on the list of libraries that hold it. Link to EOU to be directed to our catalog, where you will see that it is an electronic resource available for reading online. (Off-campus students will need to enter their EOU ID and Library PIN to access it.)

Note that you may find books that are held by Pierce Library, but Eastern Oregon University will not always appear as an available link. It's always a good idea to double-check by searching our catalog, followed by a search of the Summit catalog. In most cases, you will find the book and be able to request it.

Many students are busy writing papers these days and wondering how to find Library resources. Help can be found in and out of Pierce Library!

If you're an on-campus student, or you live within driving distance, drop by the library and go to the ERC (Electronic Resource Center), located on the first floor of the library. Friendly student assistants and staff on duty there are always glad to lend a hand.

Library staff are also available for research help outside the library. Look for the library help desk located in the second floor Common Area of North Hall Sunday evenings from 7 to 9 pm. (Be there or be square!)

It's easy for off-campus students to ask questions too. Use the Answerland email webform, which can also be found on the Ask a Librarian page (beneath Help) on the library home page. You will also find contact information there, if you would like to speak to someone in the library.

Welcome back to another academic year in your library! We have been busy over the summer updating our holdings and improving services. If you're reading this blog, you know that Pierce Library has a new home page, and we're excited about it! One major difference that you will notice is the ability to search any of the catalogs directly from the home page - Whoo Hoo!

Take time to check out our new list of online databases available from the 'Article databases by title' link in the search area for articles and newspapers. Note that some database descriptions are followed by a link to Search tips or Basic and Advanced Tutorials.

Check out the menu drop-downs near the top of the page to find a library FAQ, the Ask a Librarian page (including a link to Answerland!), library account information and more.

Cambridge Histories Online

Available now from Pierce Library! This unique historical reference compendium allows instant access to the renowned texts of the Cambridge Histories series. With access to the most up to date and authoritative scholarly content, Cambridge Histories Online is an invaluable resource, for undergraduates, graduates, lecturers and researchers alike. All the available volumes are grouped into topics, making it quick and easy to search and browse through an array of historical subject areas.

You can also link to By Database Subject or Name (beneath Find Journal / Newspaper Articles on the Pierce Library home page) to find Cambridge Histories Online on the alphabetical list of databases. EOU Colloquium May 28

Plan to attend the next EOU colloquium on campus, if you live within traveling distance. Zachary Walter, Instructor of English/Writing in the College of Arts & Sciences will be presenting Essays on the End of the World: Creative & Philosophical Inquiry into Apocalyptic Preoccupation Thursday, May 28 at 4 pm in Ackerman Hall Room 210. Refreshments will be provided at 3:30 pm.

Walter will discuss human preoccupation with the end of the world and how his inquiry into its origins informs the evolution and creation of his present literary work-in-progress. In a glimpse inside his creative process, Walter will share his method as well as elaborate upon his inquiry into apocalyptic preoccupation from social, psychological, and theoretical points of perspective.

Jazz Music Library

If you're a jazz fan (or not!) you will be blown away by the Jazz Music Library! Access it from the Pierce Library home page beneath Find Journal / Newspaper Articles - Database Trials. Listen to selections by clicking on the arrow in the circle that precedes each title. Please use the 'Feedback' link at the top of the Trials page to let us know what you think before May 29, when the trial for this database expires:

Jazz Music Library will be the largest and most comprehensive collection of jazz available online with thousands of jazz artists, ensembles, albums, and genres. At launch, the collection includes works licensed from legendary record labels, including Audiophile, Concord Jazz, Contemporary Records, Fantasy, Jazzology, Milestone, Nessa Records, Original Jazz Classics, Pablo, and Prestige. If you live near campus - or you're planning a road trip through La Grande - be sure to check out the new look in our Reading Room. You can relax in comfort while you read, study, or visit with others, all the while enjoying hot or cold drinks, snacks, and pastries from Magna Cum Latte, the library coffee cart (open M-F from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm).

Take a tour through the building and you'll also find other areas that have been rearranged with your comfort in mind: Our viewing room on the ground floor (near the Circulation desk) has been improved, and the quiet study areas on the second floor have been reorganized too.

Spring Term Buzz

Spring is slowly arriving in the Grande Ronde Valley, and a new term has begun at EOU. "Welcome back" to students returning from spring break, and "welcome" to those who are new!

Students taking online courses and living off-campus: Be sure to check mail sent recently to your EOU email address for a message from Pierce Library! It includes your Library barcode number, PIN information and more. You can also learn more about using the library by linking to Services for Online Students from the library home page.

On-campus students and those who live within driving distance: Stop by the library soon to see the results of our spring break reorganization. You will find a comfortable place for quiet study on the second floor, or relaxation and visiting in our Reading Room on the first floor. Take time to enjoy the view and have a coffee drink, tea, or a smoothie! Pastries and snacks are also available.

Video Streaming Now Available!

A select number of films (listed below) are now available for streaming from the EOU Pierce Library catalog.

If you are not familiar with "streaming media", here's a definition: Video or audio transmitted over a network that users can begin to play immediately. Rather than having to wait for a large multimedia file to download all at once, streaming allows the user to see and hear that file as it is being downloaded to the user's computer. Typically a few seconds of data is sent ahead and buffered in case of network transmission delays. Examples: RealMedia, QuickTime, Windows Media.

Your Library Barcode Number

Welcome to winter term at Pierce Library!

Online/Onsite students: An email message was recently sent to your EOU email address from Pierce Library. It included your Library barcode number, PIN information, an attachment to print your library card (example above), and more. If you received the message, great! If you didn't, please check your EOU email.

On Campus Students: Look for your Library barcode number on the back of your student ID card. If you have not created a Library PIN, link to Your Library Account from the Pierce Library home page (beneath Quick Links) and follow the directions on the screen.

New Summit Catalog

A new Summit unified catalog is coming on Monday, December 1!

Access the catalog beneath Find Books & Other Materials on the Pierce Library home page to find and request materials as you normally would from other libraries. Please note that the new Summit will not initially be able to process renewals, and therefore the loan period will be 6 weeks (beginning December 1). As soon as feasible, the capacity for renewing will be restored.

If you're new to using Summit, it allows you to request books and materials from other academic libraries in the Orbis Cascade Alliance. The new and improved Summit catalog will make it easier for you to find the items you're looking for. With one search, the new catalog will present results from the collections of the Orbis Cascade Alliance's member institutions in Oregon and Washington, followed by results from libraries around the world: in all, the system provides access to more than 107 million records for books and other materials.

Highlighting Databases

Classes are well under way, and students are discovering some great resources available to them from the library home page, including the alphabetical list of databases. Link to it beneath Find Journal / Newspaper Articles on the library home page, and use your Library barcode and the PIN you have created to access any of the databases listed, if you are accessing them from off campus.

Take a few minutes to look through the list and you will find a new addition:

Pierce Library's collection includes thousands of Ebooks, which you can link to directly from the catalog and read wherever you are! You can view the complete list by accessing the catalog and looking for Pierce Library EBooks beneath Featured Collections.

You can also use the Advanced Search feature to search by title and determine whether or not a book is available electronically: Click on Advanced Search, enter the title in the search box, limit Material Type to EBOOK, and hit Submit.

You can use the same steps to search by subject or keyword. A keyword search on 'study skills', for example, resulted in this EBook:

Fossil Turtles and Past Climate Change

Do you live within driving distance of campus, and have an interest in fossil turtles and past climate change? Plan to attend the colloquium presentation Thursday, May 8 at 4 pm in Ackerman 210 (refreshments at 3:30).

Dr. Joe Corsini, Associate Professor of Biology from EOU's College of Arts & Sciences, will describe his research into the lives and times of turtles alive during the transition from the Eocene to the Oligocene epoch, which occurred during an episode of significant global climate change about 30 million years ago.

Pierce Library Barcode

If you are a new student, or a continuing student who has lost track of your Library barcode number, an automated email sent to your campus email address at the beginning of each term will be arriving soon from Pierce Library.

You will need your barcode number to request library books, and access electronic reserves and online databases. The message from the library will also include information about setting up a Personal Identification Number (PIN), using the Answerland email webform to submit questions, and checking our Wired Distant blog for news updates from the library.
